Early Large-flowered GroupClematis 'Hoshi-no-flamenco' |
An attractive Japanese cultivar with large, bright red flowers. Recommended for cultivation in all types of house gardens. WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Flowers large, across 15–17 cm, bright purple-red, velvety. Sepals wide, elliptic, with tips slightly curled; stamens bright yellow. Free-flowering from mid-May till the end of June. Leaves dark green with entire margins, either simple, cordate, or compound, trifoliate, consisting of elliptic, pointy leaflets. HOW IT GROWS: A climber; uses leaf petioles for climbing. Reaches 2 m height. WHERE TO PLANT: Well-lit but not sun-exposed sites are the good choice. The plant prefers fertile soil, moist but well drained, of neutral or slightly acidic pH. Frost hardy (zone 4–9). HOW TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN: Before planting immerse the plant container in water for 10-30 min. Place the root ball in a 60 x 60 x 60 cm hole with a 10 cm layer of pebbles and gravel at the bottom. Cover the roots with a bucket of well-rotten manure or compost and fill up with fertile soil. Place the plant base 5–10 cm deeper than it was before. Plant at least 30 cm from walls and other plants. The base should be in a shade. Cover the ground around the new plants with bark mulch and for winter protection pile it up to 10 cm. In April fertilize with Osmocote 5-6 M and water adequately in growing season. At the end of February or at the beginning of March remove dead shoots and lightly prune the live ones – in the first year around 30 cm from the base, above the stronger buds, in the second year – 70 cm, and 150 cm in following seasons. HOW TO APPLY: Recommended for training along free-standing supports or those attached to walls as well as in large containers in balconies and terraces. ORIGIN: Japan. Raised by Minoru Hoshino, Japan. SIMILAR CULTIVARS: 'Mazowsze', 'Monte Cassino', 'Niobe', 'Rouge Cardinal', 'Sunset', 'Ville de Lyon'. |
