A Japanese cultivar of flowers 15-20 cm in diameter, consisting of 6-8 blue-violet, pointed elliptic sepals with a wide white bar along the middle and wavy edges. Stamens consist of creamy-coloured filaments that turn purple towards the top, and purple anthers. Flowers are borne in the second half of May till June and reappear, although less generously, in August - September. Reaches 2-2.5 m height. Climbs by means of leaf petiolae. Suitable for growing over fences, arbours, trellises, poles and other garden supports. It can climb natural supports, such as deciduous or coniferous shrubs not requiring heavy pruning. Thrives in well-lit sites. Looks particularly attractive against dark background. Well-adjusted to container cultivation.
