Bigleaf Periwinkle |
A vigorous low growing shrub covered with large (4-8 cm across) dark, evergreen leaves. Numerous violet-blue flowers growing from the axils sprinkle the plant from April till June and in smaller amounts for the rest of summer. Thrives in fertile, humified, moist soil but also does well in average garden soil and tolerates temporary draughts. Moderately frost hardy (zone 6B-8), the plant can be successfully applied in western Poland but it is also suitable in wind-sheltered areas of central Poland. Even if its leaves or shoots freeze during winter, it regrows from the underground parts the way perennial plants do. An excellent ground cover suitable for shaded and semi-shaded sites. |
